In 2014, we launched a Summer Lunch Program for kids in a local RV park.
Since then, we have made it our goal to ensure that each child has a nutritious meal to replace the free lunches they receive during the school year.
We are kicking off the 2016 lunch program on
Monday, June 27th!
So far we have 5 kids signed up, with more in the park that we're hoping will join as the summer progresses. =)
This program is aimed at kids 18 and younger, and is designed to fill the gap created by the loss of free or reduced-priced school lunches. All of the kids who participate in our program qualify for free or reduced-price lunches at their school. The summer months when kids are home creates an added burden on parents who rely on help to ensure their children get the nutrition they need. Food stamps don't go very far, and with an added meal for each school-aged child 5 days a week, many of these kids go without lunch.

In 2014, we served over 500 lunches to 10-12 kids! These lunches included a sandwich, fresh apple, juice drink, and snack. We also added a Sunday Brunch to our program that year, in which we served a hot meal of pancakes or french toast to each child (plus any friends who might be visiting)! In 2015, we served over 450 lunches to 8 children! This year, Fridays were 'Special Lunch' days. We received a donation of a large bag of party favor-type toys, and decided to make each Friday special by including one of these toys in each lunch! We threw in a special treat on Fridays as well, such as home-baked cookies, to sweeten the deal even more. =) We also received a very large donation of hygiene products, including shampoo/conditioner, body wash, deodorant, etc.! We distributed about half of these items to the children just before the school year began, and handed out the rest in October to replenish their supply. |
